Newborn Essentials: What I'm Actually Using With My Second Baby

Newborn Essentials: What I'm Actually Using With My Second Baby

The first time I had a baby, I bought everything. Every gadget, every “must-have,” every cute thing the internet told me I needed. Half of it never got used.

Now, with my second baby here and a toddler running circles around me, I’ve gotten ruthless about what actually earns a spot in our home. So this is my honest, stripped-down list of newborn essentials — the things I reach for every single day this time around. No fluff, no pressure. Just what works.

A quick note: I’m just finishing setting up my shop links, so the direct product links are coming very soon! Everything on this list is something I genuinely use and love — check back shortly (or follow along on Pinterest) for the links. 💕

Feeding

Whether you’re breastfeeding, bottle-feeding, or doing a mix like me, the early weeks are basically one long feeding session. These made it easier.

A few good burp cloths (buy more than you think)

The one thing I never have enough of. I keep a stack in every room — they double as spit-up cloths, nursing wipes, and emergency everything.

A comfortable nursing/feeding pillow

Saves your back and arms during those long cluster-feeding evenings. I prop the baby up and actually get a free hand back.

Slow-flow newborn bottles

Even if you mostly nurse, having a couple of newborn-flow bottles ready meant my partner could take a feed so I could sleep. Lifesaver.

Sleep

I’m not going to promise you a magic product that makes a newborn sleep through the night (if only). But these genuinely helped us get a little more rest.

Swaddles that don't require an engineering degree

First time I struggled with blanket swaddles. This time I went straight for easy zip/velcro swaddles — same cozy result, half asleep, in the dark, with one hand.

A bassinet that fits beside the bed

For those every-two-hours nights, having the baby right at arm's reach made all the difference. We use ours for the first few months before transitioning to the crib.

A white noise machine

Possibly my most-used baby purchase ever. It soothes the baby and drowns out my noisy toddler so naps actually happen.

Diapering

You will change more diapers than you can count. Set up a station that makes it fast.

Newborn diapers (don't overstock one size!)

My biggest first-time mistake was buying a mountain of newborn diapers — babies grow fast. Grab one pack of newborn and one of size 1 to start.

Fragrance-free, sensitive wipes

Newborn skin is delicate. I stick to gentle, fragrance-free wipes — and keep a small pack in every bag and room.

A good diaper rash cream

Catch redness early and you avoid a lot of tears (theirs and yours). One tube lasts ages.

Soothing & those fussy evenings

The witching hour is real. These are my go-to tools for calming a fussy newborn.

A soft, stretchy baby carrier

Honestly essential with a second baby — it keeps the newborn close and calm while I still have two hands for my toddler. I wear it daily.

A couple of pacifiers

Not every baby takes one, but if yours does, keep a few clean ones within reach. I learned to never rely on finding *the* one at 3am.

A few mom-saving extras

Little things that aren’t strictly “baby gear” but kept me functioning.

A large insulated water bottle

Feeding makes you so thirsty. I keep a big bottle wherever I sit to feed — staying hydrated genuinely helped my energy and recovery.

What I skipped the second time around

Just as useful as the buy list — here’s what I didn’t repurchase, because we barely touched it the first time:

  • Wipe warmers — a nice idea, but ours just sat there. Room-temp wipes were fine.
  • Tons of newborn-size clothes — they’re outgrown in weeks. A handful of sleepers beats a full wardrobe.
  • Every specialty gadget — the fancy nasal aspirators, bottle sterilizing systems, and “smart” gadgets mostly collected dust. Simple worked.

Every baby is different, and what was perfect for mine might not be for yours — trust your gut, start small, and add things as you actually need them. You really do need far less than the lists make you believe.

If this helped, pin it for later or send it to a mom friend who’s expecting. 💕 I’ll keep updating it as my little one grows.
